The Smiths Detection Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM) is a proven product -  the first mass produced, reliable hand-held instrument capable of detecting nerve or blister agents or liquid agent contamination. More than 40,000  CAMS have now been deployed in over 30 Armed Forces around the world.  It is also widely deployed among civil defence personnel and emergency responders.
CAM makes use of ion mobility spectrometry, (IMS), principles to respond selectively and accurately to toxic chemical agent vapours.
CAM will detect nerve and blister agents to specified NATO requirements. Additional programming can be included to extend the range to cover other agents.
CAM identifies 'dirty' and 'clean' people, vehicles, munitions and stores to prevent cross-contamination and avoid unnecessary decontamination.
CAM subsequently confirms that the threat has passed, decontamination procedures have been effective and the area is clean.
The first CAM was produced in the mid-1980s. Since this time Smiths Detection has adopted a continuous program of product improvements. As a result several variants of CAM are now in service with different customers worldwide.
These include the ‘Improved CAM’ (ICAM) a post attack device that provides a means of quickly locating the presence of nerve and blister agent contamination on personnel and equipment. Also the software enhanced  CAMplus which increases the range of agents detected.
In 1999 Smiths Detection commenced the full-scale production of a further generation of CAM for the Swiss Defence Procurement Agency, with features such as a removable dopant source, automatic sample overload protection systems, interactive display and simplified operations.
